No Longer "New"!
In 1982, for the first time since decimalisation, the word "new" was omitted from all the decimal coins.
1982 - New Twenty Pence Coin Introduced
In 1982, a new twenty pence coin was introduced.
A double florin, with equivalent value had been introduced in 1887 but discontinued after 1890, partly because it was similar in size to the crown, and therefore possible to confuse with it.

New Uncirculated Set Introduced
In 1982 the Royal Mint introduced an uncirculated set in addition to the proof sets which had been issued since 1970.
Each year since 1970, the Royal Mint has produced special editions of coin sets for collectors, which are also ideal as gifts. We have a few of the 1982 United Kingdom coin sets, produced by the Royal Mint.
There are two variations of the 1982 coin sets available:-
Seven Coin Proof Set
"Proof" coins are specially struck with great care and attention. The dies are highly polished on the flat surfaces, with a frosted finish on the design, the blanks from which the coins are struck are also polished before striking (minting), so that the finished coins show their designs to the absolutely best effect. The raised relief parts of the design have a frosted finish, and stand out from the background (field) which has a mirror finish. Each coin is carefully inspected prior to packaging, and is guaranteed to be perfect and without any blemish.
1982 proof sets contain:
New twenty pence coin, featuring a crowned rose.
The other six circulating coins, 50 pence, 10 pence, 5 pence, 2 pence, 1 penny, and half penny, all with the word "NEW" omitted for the first time.
All attractively packaged in a specially designed plastic case.
Seven Coin Uncirculated Set
Contains the same seven coins as the proof set, from the 50 pence down to the halfpenny.
